Seminal hard rock band The Choirboys formed in Sydney in 1979, they had a string of minor hits reaching the mid 20′s on the Kent Music Report (the forerunner of the ARIA charts) Run To Paradise peaked at Number 11 on the KMR in early 1988, it is considered a classic piece of Oz Rock and one of the all time great Australian hit songs. There has been a lot of conjecture about what the song is about and band members refuse to confirm or deny that it is about using heroin.

Run To Paradise

Baby, you were always gonna be the one
You only ever did it just for fun
But you run to paradise
Jenny, I’ll meet you at the grocery store
You don’t need a friend when you can score
You run to paradise

Johnny, we were always best of friends
Stick together and defend
But you run to paradise
And Mamma, now don’t you worry ’bout me anymore
And I see you crying at the door
When I run to paradise

That’s right, they had it all worked out
You were young and blonde and you could never do wrong
That’s right, they were so surprised
You opened their eyes up
(opened their eyes up)
Opened their eyes up

You don’t want anyone
(You don’t, you don’t, open your eyes up)
You don’t want anyone
(You don’t, your no fool)
Don’t tell me, this is paradise
(Open your eyes up)
You don’t want anyone
(You don’t, open your eyes up)
You don’t want anyone
(You don’t, your no fool)
Don’t tell me, this is paradise

Good times, why’d I let them slip away
Why’d I let them slip away
Cause I lived in paradise
Run to paradise
Run to paradise
Run to paradise

Jesus say’s it’s gonna be alright
He’s gonna pat my back so I can walk in the light
(That’s right !)
You don’t mind if I abuse myself
So I can hold my head up
(Hold my head up)
Hold my head up

You don’t want anyone
(You don’t, hold your head up)
You don’t want anyone
(You don’t, your no fool)
Don’t tell me, this is paradise
(Open your eyes up)
You don’t need anyone
(You don’t need anyone, you don’t)
You’ll tell me, this is paradise

Normally I do not like cover versions of songs, there are very few cover versions that are better than the original, but in this case The Party Boys’ version of the John Kongos’ classic from the 70′s is so much better than the original, it has more depth and power, due in part to the double drumming and the awesome lead vocals of John Swan.

The Party Boys were an Australian supergroup which had a revolving door of local and international band members, since being formed by Mondo Rock’s Paul Christie in 1982.

This line-up of The Party Boys features Paul Christie (ex-Mondo Rock) on drums, Richard Harvey (ex-Divinyls) on 2nd drums, Kevin Borich (ex-La De Da’s), Alan Lancaster (ex-Status Quo), John Brewster (ex-Angels/Angel City) and John Swan (aka Swanee and ex-Feather singer) on lead vocals.

Other members to pass through the Party Boys door are as follows:

Harvey James (Sherbet 1982)
Graham Bidstrup (Angels/GANGgajang 1982)
Shirley Strachan (Skyhooks 1984)
James Reyne (Australian Crawl 1982)
Richard Clapton (1984)
Robin Riley (ex-Rose Tattoo 1984)
Mark Hunter (Dragon 1985)
Angry Anderson (ex-Rose Tattoo 1985)
Graham Bonnett (ex-Rainbow/Alcatrazz 1988)
Joe Walsh (ex-James Gang/Eagles 1988)
Eric Burdon (ex-Animals 1989)
Ross Wilson (ex-Daddy Cool/Mondo Rock 1989)
Brad Carr (ex-Choirboys 1990)
Steve Williams (ex-Wa Wa Nee 1990)
Mark Evans (ex-AC/DC 1992)
Barton Price (ex-Models/Mondo Rock 1992)

No I haven’t gone all Opera on you, this is just a quick PSA for all those lovely operatic types who appear on (Insert Countries Name here) Got Talent, yes indeed Nessum Dorma is a lovely stirring piece, especially if you possess a brilliant set of pipes, with excellent pitch, gorgeous delivery and excellent breathing control, in short if you are Luciano Pavarotti.

However if you appear on X’s Got Talent it’s safe to say that you aren’t Pavarotti, and that you probably don’t even come close to being Pavarotti, so by the love of all that’s holy and good in singing, please do NOT be singing Nessum Dorma. I know it fulfills several functions, the main one being it’s an operatic piece that just about every man and his dog knows, it’s a somewhat forgiving piece and yes when you hit those high sustained notes it makes you sound almost passable.

There are hundreds if not thousands of other opera pieces that you could sing, some almost as well known as Nessum Dorma, what about something from What’s Opera Doc though don’t be surprised if someone starts singing along with “KILL DA WABBIT, KILL DA WABBIT’, oh hell why not just go on and play Elmer Fudd as a straight piece, that would be just awesome.

If you really must sing something in Italian, then let me tell you A Whiter Shade Of Pale sounds awesome when sung in Italian, as do most things, look it served Il Divo and Paul Potts well, instead of inflicting Nessum Dorma on us again, think laterally, what about McArthur Park in Italian, that way you can be obscure and baffling at the same time.

What’s Opera Doc with a real orchestra!

Today would have been my beautiful Mums 75th birthday, so in her honour I am posting one of her most favourite songs ever, Bat Out Of Hell by MeatLoaf, Mum loved this album so much, she wore through two cassettes and one LP of Bat Out of hell before it became available on CD.

I have many many memories of my Mum singing along to the entire LP, but the song Bat Out Of Hell was her definite favourite from it, I can still see her standing in the kitchen with the stereo turned up as loud as it could go, belting out Bat Out Of Hell as loud as she could.

Mum loved this song so much that she asked for it to be played at her funeral, which is what we did, it may have shocked a few of Mums’ more staid relatives, but it was the least we could do for her. I remember sitting there with tears streaming down my face as the opening bars of Bat Out Of Hell rang out, but then I couldn’t also stop from smiling as I remembered how much joy Mum got from this album, mind you then it took me several years until I could listen to Bat Out Of Hell myself without crying, which I don’t think MeatLoaf ever intended.

So Happy Birthday to my darling most wonderful Mum, I miss you more than ever and love you more than ever, I can’t promise I won’t cry as I sing along this time.

Me

xoxoxo

This song is awesome, one of the many hit songs that The Statler Brothers had during the 60s and 70s

The Statler Brothers were not brothers and Statler wasn’t even any of their names

Flowers On The Wall

I’ve keep hearin’ you’re concerned about my happiness
But all that thought you’re givin’ me is conscience I guess
If I were walkin’ in your shoes I wouldn’t worry none
While you and your friends’re worryin’ bout me I’m havin’ lots of fun

Chorus:
Countin’ flowers on the wall that don’t bother me at all
Playin’ solitare till dawn with a deck of fifty one
Smokin’ cigarettes and watchin’ Captain Kangaroo
Now don’t tell me I’ve nothing to do

Last night I dressed in tails pretended I was on the town
As long as I can dream it’s hard to slow this swinger down
So please don’t give a thought to me I’m really doin’ fine
You can always find me here and havin’ quite a time

Chorus

It’s good to see you I must go I know I look a fright
Anyway my eyes are not accustomed to this light
And my shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete
So I must go back to my room and make my day complete

Chorus
Don’t tell me I’ve nothing to do

I come bearing gifts from the 1980′s, Dear Enemy and Computer One, this song came out in 1983, one year after I had bought my very first computer, an original grey case Tandy TRS-80 with 16k of RAM. I loved that computer so much, I pretty much spent all my money on games for this beastie, and boy were they expensive for the time. My computer saved my sanity so many times during a rather tumultuous period of my live, and saved my life literally on more than one occasion.

This song made it to only number 5 on the Countdown chart, I thought it deserved to go much higher. Dear Enemy were a highly regarded band on the indie circuit and this sadly was their only charting song. Pity.

Computer One

Computer One I’d like to ask a question please
Exactly where does love go wrong
I thought she knew how much she meant to me
I turned around to see and she was gone

So tell me Computer One
Why did she run
Where has she gone
Computer One

Computer One, if you know all you say you do
Why isn’t the answer on the screen
Do you sleep at night when the cold whips through
Or do you like awake at night like me

So tell me Computer One
Why did she run
Where has she gone
Computer One

Computer One, you are the one I’ve been talking to
And maybe that’s where I went wrong
All the secrets that I told to you
I should have told to her all along

So tell me Computer One
Why did she run
Where has she gone
Computer One

( I transcribed the lyrics from listening to the video clip, so excuse any errors)

Classic oz rock from 1978 from the outstanding Skyhooks, their album Livin’ in the 70′s is one of the best Australian rock albums of all time, with the amazing vocals of Graham ‘Shirley’ Strachan on lead, the Hooks dominated the Australian charts for well over a decade.

Shirl died in a helicopter crash in 2001 and is sadly missed by all Australian music lovers, Red Symons, lead guitarist for the Hooks was once asked about the possibility of there being a reunion tour and he said that ‘without Shirley, there is no Skyhooks’.

It’s a pity that more bands didn’t feel the same way, yes I’m looking straight at you INXS, after Michael died you should have retired gracefully, all of you. AC/DC is a rare exception to the rule that replacing a lead singer never works.

Women In Uniform lyrics

Hello there sailor
Hi there Lili Marlene
Good morning school girls
Welcome to the team

Beehive hairdo forty-five on the hip
Patrolwoman Saunders don’t you give her no lip
Took me to the station for a breath test
Then back to her bedroom for some house arrest

Women in uniform sometimes they look so cold
Women in uniform but oooh they feel so warm

Flying to my hometown on a 747
Stewardess made me feel like I’m in heaven
Looking up the aisle trying to see what I could see
She leaned over and said coffee tea or me
White apron and brown leather shoes
The nurse at the clinic left my heart all bruised
Broke my left leg and sprained my right
Now she takes my temperature every night

Women in uniform sometimes they look so cold
Women in uniform but ooh they feel so warm
Women in uniform Women in uniform
Women in uniform Women in uniform

Commando raid on the Lebanese border
Sergeant Anita she gives the order
Khaki jacket and a sten gun
Baby I surrender let’s have some fun

Khaki navy blue and brass buttons bring me to my knees
A peaked cap and a badge or two oooh they’re such a tease
So girls if the man you need just won’t come across
Put on a uniform show him who’s the boss

Women in uniform sometimes they look so cold
Women in uniform but ooh they feel so warm
Women in uniform khaki white and blue
Women in uniform coming after you

I love this song so much, Jon English was born in London and emigrated to Australia at a relatively young age, he rose to fame playing Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar and went on to have a massive series of Number one songs in Australia and in Europe, he is an accomplished actor as well as a singer and starred as a washed up rock star in the hit comedy All Together Now. One of his best roles on stage has been that of The Pirate King in The Pirates Of Penzance, he was brilliant in this and his crotch was something to behold !

‘Cause she never could sleep on trains
She took the bus to Hollywood
Lookin’ for a room in the pourin’ rain
With her hair so blonde and her eyes so brown
She thought she’d take this town and turn it upside down

Well I was livin’ in a hotel just off Sunset
She moved in across the hall
And she said she’d be a movie star
And waited every mornin’ for the ca-all
So I asked her in to share a drink
But she hardly had the ti-ime
A call might come tomorrow
She had to learn her li-ines

On Hollywood Seven
Rooms to rent till your name goes up in lights
Oh-oh Hollywood Seven
You can dream your dreams for seven bucks a night

Well, the months went by without a job
The money that she saved was nearly spent
So she started bringin’ strangers home
Tryin’ to find a way to pay the rent
Well she’d sit down and drink my coffee
With nothin’ much to say-ay
Just busy rehearsin’ in her mind
The scenes she’d never play-ay

On Hollywood Seven, rooms to rent
Till your name goes up in lights
Oh-oh, Hollywood Seven
You can dream your dreams for seven bucks a night

Well I found her there one mornin’
When she didn’t come for coffee when I ca-alled
She’d gone and brought the wrong one home this time
There were crazy lipstick marks up on the wa-all
Now she’s goin’ back to Omaha but not the way she’d pla-anned
There’ll be no crowd to cheer her on, no welcome home, no ba-and

On Hollywood Seven, rooms to rent, till your name goes up in lights
Oh Hollywood Seven, you can dream your dreams for seven bucks a night
On Hollywood Seven, dreams to rent, till your name goes up in lights
Oh-oh Hollywood Seven, you can pay your dues for seven bucks a night

No Milk Today

No milk today, my love has gone away
The bottle stands for lorn, a symbol of the dawn
No milk today, it seems a common sight
But people passing by don’t know the reason why

How could they know just what this message means
The end of my hopes, the end of all my dreams
How could they know the palace there had been
Behind the door where my love reigned as queen

No milk today, it wasn’t always so
The company was gay, we’d turn night into day

But all that’s left is a place dark and lonely
A terraced house in a mean street back of town
Becomes a shrine when I think of you only
Just two up two down

No milk today, it wasn’t always so
The company was gay, we’d turn night into day
As music played the faster did we dance
We felt it both at once, the start of our romance

How could they know just what this message means
The end of my hopes, the end of all my dreams
How could they know a palace there had been
Behind the door where my love reigned as queen

No milk today, my love has gone away
The bottle stands forlorn, a symbol of the dawn

But all that’s left is a place dark and lonely
A terraced house in a mean street back of town
Becomes a shrine when I think of you only
Just two up two down

No milk today, my love has gone away
The bottle stands forlorn, a symbol of the dawn
No milk today, it seems a common sight
But people passing by don’t know the reason why

How could they know just what this message means
The end of my hopes, the end of all my dreams
How could they know a palace there had been
Behind the door where my love reigned as queen

No milk today, it wasn’t always so
The company was gay, we’d turn night into day

But all that’s left is a place dark and lonely
A terraced house in a mean street back of town
Oh all that’s left is a place dark and lonely
